Ranked Choice Voting

  • Edina City Hall 4801 West 50th Street Edina, MN, 55424 United States (map)

LWVE's evening meeting on November 16 will be a factual presentation on Ranked Choice Voting. We are excited to welcome speakers David Maeda, Director of Elections, Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State and Katie Smith, Director of Elections and Voters Services, City of Minneapolis.

Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) is currently being used in the cities of Minneapolis, St. Paul, St. Louis Park, Bloomington and Minnetonka. Smith will discuss how RCV has been implemented and is working in Minneapolis city elections. Maeda will focus on efforts to expand RCV to statewide elections and how that would affect statewide election administration.

Maeda was appointed to be the Director of Elections for the Office of the Secretary of State in January 2019. Prior to his appointment he served 12 years as the Minnetonka City Clerk. He has also served as an elections supervisor for Washington and Hennepin Counties. Prior to serving as Director of Elections and Voter Services for the City of Minneapolis, Smith was the Elections Manager in Olmsted County.
